Shock struts—even overbuilt models like ours—take a tremendous beating compared to the coil-over shocks they are designed to replace. For this reason, great care should be taken to ensure your shock struts are installed as solidly and as upright as possible. Sideloading of the struts can put excessive stress on the weld joints and shock ends, resulting in cracks or breakage.
The illustration below shows the right and wrong way to mount your struts. Standard 1/2” I.D. flat washers can and should be used to fine-tune the vertical alignment of both struts, or you can make spacers on a lathe. Remember: shocks generally have rubber bushings on the eyelets that struts do not. These rubber bushings exist to correct minor misalignment between the shock-mounting stud and the shock eye. Since struts don’t feature this component, spacers may be needed to ensure proper alignment.
Never install Biltwell shock struts on any size other than 1/2” O.D. mounting studs. Doing so may result in catastrophic failure of the strut and/or the mounting stud. Use blue Loc-Tite to secure the threads on mounting studs and nuts, and torque the studs to the tension specified in your motorcycle’s owner’s manual.
Make sure your chain or drive belt don’t rub any part of your motorcycle after switching to shock struts, and make sure your fender doesn’t hit the top of your tire.
